National School Board Recognition Month is celebrated every January by school districts across the United States. It’s an opportunity for local schools and communities to honor Oklahoma’s more than 2,700 elected school board members for their dedication and service to children and schools.
School board members voluntarily take on the job of governing school districts while preserving the core of our democratic values. Although they wear many hats in the workday world, school board members put on a collective hat when they get down to the business of leading their school districts. Board members must pull together as a team toward a common goal—helping students achieve.
The board members of Perry Public Schools spend countless hours assessing the school’s budget, education initiatives, policies, health and safety protocols, hiring personnel, listening to concerns, and planning for the future. They bear responsibility for Perry’s 1,000+ students, 135 employees, and facilities.
The time spent in board meetings represents just a small fraction of the hours school board members spend leading the district. They also attend seminars and training sessions to keep up with the latest trends in educational leadership, not to mention their involvement in community activities and school extracurricular events.
Even though there’s a special effort during January to show appreciation for our school board members, their contributions reflect a year-round effort.
“Being a board member is not a task that comes lightly. It take a special person with great discernment, who is willing to commit their time and talents to public education,” commented Mr. Chad Wilson, Superintendent of Perry Public Schools. "I cannot thank our board members enough for serving in this capacity, and for providing support and leadership for our students and staff."
This month we recognize the dedicated service of the men and women serving Perry Public Schools, including Jason Proctor, president, Aaron Frable, vice president, Marsha Hartwig, clerk, Marvin Dement, member, and Amy Chenowith, member (not pictured).
The Perry Board of Education members were celebrated during the monthly school board meeting on Monday, January 8. Each board member received a certificate of appreciation, cards signed by students and staff, a handmade poster by students, balloons, and the school's food service provided finger foods for board members and attendees to enjoy.
Take time to thank a school board member during National School Board Recognition Month!
