Perry Public Schools educators took advantage of the rare solar eclipse to create an engaging and educational experience for their students. The total solar eclipse provided a unique opportunity for students to learn about astronomy and the science behind this natural phenomenon. Teachers across the district provided activities, crafts, lessons, and discussions about the sun, the moon, and the Earth, fostering a deeper understanding of the world beyond the confines of the classroom.
At the upper elementary, teachers were in a professional development session prior to the eclipse crossing the path of Perry. So during this time, they invited high school leadership seniors to cover their classes and lead student lessons, with 4th-6th graders, about the solar eclipse. The counselors and specials teachers assisted. These activities included solar eclipse mythology and writing, a chalk art activity, and more. It was a great opportunity to get the seniors involved with younger students for peer-to-peer learning and mentorship within the school community. All elementary students, PreK-6th grade, made UV bracelets. They used beads that are clear, but are activated by UV rays. So, when students went outside to view the eclipse, the beads on their bracelets turned colors, allowing students to visually see the effects of the eclipse in real-time.
Overall, Perry Public Schools made the most out of this unique astronomical event and provided students with a memorable and enriching learning experience.
Shoutout to all the teachers and staff for making it a special day for everyone!
