STUDENT WALKER SAFETY

Perry Elementary Parents & Guardians,

With student safety top of mind, we would like to bring attention to the proper procedure for students walking to/from Perry Lower & Upper Elementary School.

A “WALKER” is defined as a student who walks by foot from home to school for arrival and/or dismissal.

However, we are seeing that many parents/guardians are parking vehicles along the street, in our neighbors’ yards, and in alleyways to utilize the crosswalk to drop-off or pick up their child. This is not a preferred method and causes several safety concerns and problems, including:

  • Students cannot be adequately monitored to guarantee they are leaving school with the correct parent/guardian.
  • Young students scattering at the crosswalk is not safe, especially with the increase of traffic at the time of drop-off/dismissal.
  • Vehicles parking and walking through neighboring yards and driveways is disrespectful to the homeowners/business owners.
  • Vehicles parked along the side streets are obstructing the flow of traffic.

Bottom line is - if you are in a vehicle, you need to be in the car line to drop-off and pick up your child(ren).

Only students who are walking all the way home should be considered true “walkers” for dismissal. Please discontinue parking vehicles across the street from the school and begin utilizing the car line.

Thank you for your cooperation and thoughtful consideration of student safety.
