PHS Baseball to host Hector Tovar Classic March 27-29
The 29th Annual Hector Tovar Classic high school baseball tournament is coming up at Ripley Field in Perry, March 27-29.
This tournament was officially named in honor of Hector Tovar in 1996 in memory of a beloved community sports enthusiast and legend. Hector had a passion for baseball and loved being out at the “yard.” He spent over 30 years coaching youth sports in Perry, Oklahoma, dating from the 1960’s to the early 1990’s.
Hector passed away on June 5, 1996. He was married to Virginia (Terronez) Tovar and they have three sons, David, Mark and Roger, as well as two daughters, Gloria and Rita. Many of the family members will be in attendance for this special tribute at Ripley Field.
There will be a ceremonial first pitch on all three days of the tournament.
On Thursday, March 27, the Tovar family will throw the first pitch and it will take place prior to the 5:00 p.m. PHS game.
On Friday, prior to the 7:30 p.m. PHS game, Virginia Tovar, the late Hector Tovar’s wife, will take the field to throw the first pitch.
Saturday’s ceremonial first pitch will take place prior to the 12:30 p.m. game by special guests who are reuniting for the occasion. Members of the 1989 Perry 12U little league team, who was coached by Hector Tovar and Dennis Maine, will come together at Ripley Field and they will all throw the first pitch.
There will also be giveaways for kids to enter during the tournament, sponsored by the Tovar family. Any little league youth baseball player, from T-ball to 12U, can enter to win a glove and bat bag. Winners will be announced on Saturday and do not have to present to win.
The community is invited to join the team and Tovar family for a fun weekend of baseball! While at the ballpark, grab a burger from the concession stand and enter your child in the baseball giveaway.
The Perry Diamond Club will also announce the winner of the Perry Baseball uniform quilt raffle during the 5:30 p.m. PHS game on Saturday evening.
